FLUENT Verification ProjectMeeting at USU, attended by @
Zhen Zhang , @
Rikki and @
Winstead .
- Setup Rikki on web server
- Site tutorial
- Reviewed task list from previous meeting
- Rikki contacted some outreach organizations: USU Blanding Outreach Office, Advisors at Bridgerland Tech (BTech), Cache Makers 4H STEM division (they do coding camps, robot projects, etc), InTech Collegiate High School, UATP (assistive technology program)
- Discussed with InTech about identifying students who want to pursue computing majors and directly interfacing with them.
- UATP is mostly undergrad students who use assistive devices, talked to them about promoting computing as a major to that group. Students with disabilities tend not to explore STEM majors.
- Northern Utah Native Connection: connecting native students with avenues for study and careers in computing
- Other outreach ideas:
- "Fast Forward" alternative charter high school, has a specialty in electronic music
- "East Hollywood" in SLC is focused on video production
- Cache High School alternative school that serves "credit recovery," teen mothers and other students in challenged situations. They are trying to feed students into university programs, with limited success. They also have an adult-ed program that provides college preparation for older students.
- Rikki proposes doing a preliminary survey following some existing STEM program to sample participants' attitudes about computing fields. We can use this as a baseline for assessing the impact of our future activities.
